Is ChatGPT still on WhatsApp? What happened, and what works in 2026

For about a year you could save 1-800-ChatGPT as a WhatsApp contact and message ChatGPT like a friend. In most of the world, including the US, that stopped on 15 January 2026. Brazil was exempted, and it came back in Europe in July. Here is what happened, where ChatGPT on WhatsApp still works, and what you can use instead if you want an AI in your WhatsApp chat list. What happened

In October 2025 Meta changed the terms of its WhatsApp Business platform to bar general-purpose AI assistants, where the AI is the main thing being offered. Businesses can still use AI for customer support on WhatsApp; what the new rule targets is a standalone chatbot like ChatGPT. The change took effect on 15 January 2026. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity all left WhatsApp that day — except for users with Brazilian (+55) numbers, whom Meta exempted after Brazil's competition regulator intervened (TechCrunch).

Europe went differently. In June 2026 the European Commission ordered interim measures requiring Meta to restore free access for rival AI assistants, and OpenAI brought ChatGPT back to WhatsApp across the European Economic Area on 13 July 2026 (The Decoder, GSMArena). The order covers the EEA only.

If you're outside the EEA and Brazil and message the old number, it won't answer. ChatGPT itself still works in its own app and on the web; it's only the WhatsApp contact that went away.

What you can use on WhatsApp instead

Meta AI is built into WhatsApp and is free. In September 2026 Meta added Muse, an agent that works inside WhatsApp, connects to your email and calendar, and can book travel and buy things for you.
