"ChatGPT in iMessage" means three different things depending on who is asking, and only one of them lets you text an AI from your phone. On 20 August 2026 OpenAI added an Apple Messages plugin to the ChatGPT desktop app, which put the phrase in the news. That plugin runs on a Mac, though, and it works on the messages you already have. What the ChatGPT Messages plugin does

The plugin gives ChatGPT access to the Messages app on your Mac. According to 9to5Mac and MacRumors, it can search your iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations, find something in your history, suggest and draft replies, and send messages to your contacts. It is included on every ChatGPT plan but works only in the desktop app's Work and Codex modes, not in ordinary chats, and only on Apple silicon Macs — not on the web or on your phone.

To do that it needs Full Disk Access in macOS System Settings, plus access to your contacts and to automation. OpenAI says the plugin runs locally and reads messages only in response to a request rather than indexing them. Sending asks you to approve the message and recipients by default; you can allow sending to a specific chat without asking, and OpenAI itself advises against granting persistent approval.

That access model is the point of the privacy criticism. Proton and Bloomberg both noted that messages protected inside Apple's ecosystem can be passed to ChatGPT and handled under OpenAI's retention and legal-access rules instead. Whether that trade is worth it depends on what is in your threads — but it is a different trade from texting an assistant, which only ever sees the messages you send it.

What works on iPhone

Nothing from OpenAI puts ChatGPT inside an iMessage thread on iPhone. What you do have is the ChatGPT extension in Apple Intelligence on supported devices: Siri can pass a question to ChatGPT, and the writing tools can use it to draft or rewrite text you are composing — including a message you are about to send. It is useful for wording a reply. It is not a contact you can text, it does not remember your earlier conversations, and it does not go and do anything for you.

The other way to get AI into iMessage is to make the AI the other end of the conversation. The assistant has its own number; you save it as a contact and text it from any device you already message from. Nothing reads your other threads, because the assistant only receives what you send it.
