Is there an AI that waits on hold for you? What works in 2026

Nobody wants to spend 40 minutes listening to the same eight bars of hold music. The good news is that the phone you already own may handle it. The less good news is that the built-in features still need you nearby, and the services that take the whole call off your hands are paid and narrow. Here's what works as of September 2026. We make Arlo, which is in this category but doesn't do this particular job, and we say so below.

What your phone can already do

iPhone. Apple added Hold Assist to the Phone app in iOS 26, released in September 2025. When you're put on hold, you can let your iPhone wait; it listens for the hold music to end and alerts you when an agent is on the line (Apple). It works on iPhone 12 and later, including iPhone SE (3rd generation), but not in every country. It isn't foolproof. Because it listens for music, recorded announcements or songs with lyrics can confuse it (MacRumors), and some users report missed alerts.

Google Pixel. Hold for Me launched with the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) in 2020 and now works on Pixel 3 and later, in English in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia and in Japanese in Japan (Google). It waits while you're on hold and lets you know when a person joins. Samsung phones don't have an equivalent built in.

Both features save you from holding the phone to your ear. Neither makes the call or talks to anyone for you.

Services that take the call off your hands

ClawCall waits through a US business's phone menu and hold queue for you, then calls you back when a person is on the line. Plans are a small monthly subscription (ClawCall).

Pine AI handles customer-service calls end to end: cancellations, refunds and bill negotiations, by phone and email, including waiting on hold. Catch, an assistant for executives, says it gets through phone menus when it calls restaurants, clinics and airlines for you. Instinct's Concierge feature, in early access, handles jobs like a cable bill. Code spotted in a beta of Google's Phone app points to a Gemini "Call for me" feature that would wait on hold for you, but as of September 2026 Google hasn't announced it.

Where Arlo fits

Arlo makes phone calls for you, but it isn't a hold-waiter. It can't press through a phone menu, and it isn't built to wait on hold: if nobody on the line speaks for about 30 to 45 seconds, it says goodbye and hangs up. Its calls are for when a person picks up: confirming an appointment, chasing a supplier, asking a question, leaving a voicemail if nobody answers. If that's the job, here's how it works.
