What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

AEO is the practice of structuring your site so AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews cite you as the answer.

AEO — answer engine optimization — is the practice of structuring your site so AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews) cite you as the answer to a query. It's the next layer of search optimization, sitting on top of traditional SEO.

Why does AEO matter now?

Gartner projects 25% of organic search traffic shifts to AI chatbots by 2026. When someone asks ChatGPT "best dentist in Phoenix," that's a query that used to flow through Google. Now it flows through Anthropic, OpenAI, and Perplexity instead — and the user never sees a list of 10 blue links. They see one or two cited sources.

If you're not the cited source, you're invisible.

How is AEO different from SEO?

Traditional SEO is built around 10 blue links: rank in the top 5 to capture clicks. AEO is built around being the answer: structure your content so AI engines cite you as the source when users ask questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini. Traditional rank tracking measures position — AEO measures citation.

  • SEO: keyword → page → rank → click.
  • AEO: question → AI engine → cited answer → brand recall.

The mechanics overlap (schema, content quality, NAP consistency), but the priorities are different.

What's in the AEO stack?

  1. Schema markup — structured data tells AI engines who you are, what you do, where you are. LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Service are the foundation.
  2. Answer-first content — the first paragraph of every article must directly answer the question, in 2–3 sentences. AI engines extract the first 100 words.
  3. Citation tracking — measure whether you're being cited, on which queries, by which engines. If you can't measure it, you can't move it.
  4. GBP recency — Google Business Profile activity is the largest local-pack ranking factor. Weekly posts compound.
  5. Fact-anchored writing — every claim traces to a source. AI engines are getting better at distrusting fluff. Specificity wins citations.

How do you get started with AEO?

  1. Run an AEO audit on your domain. (We do this free at arlo.sh.)
  2. Fix schema first — it's the highest-leverage day-1 win.
  3. Restart your GBP cadence.
  4. Publish two answer-first articles per week.
  5. Track your citation rate weekly. Adjust.

The whole thing is bounded and repeatable, which is why we built Arlo to do it autonomously.
